What is WGS84?

/ 1 min read

Introduction

These days, while Tesla and Robotaxi company arguing whether use LiDAR sensor or not, actually they are normally make autonomous driving possible based on advanced GPS system like RTK(Real-time kinematic positioning) using HD maps1.

What is WGS84?

The Global Positioning System uses the World Geodetic System (WGS84) as its reference coordinate system.

It consists of a reference ellipsoid2, a standard coordinate system, altitude data, and a geoid3.

Geodesists believe the error is less than 2 cm.

Footnotes

  1. HD maps : A highly accurate map used primarily in the field of autonomous driving.

  2. Ellipsoid : It has a certain defined radius at the equator and a flattening at the top.

  3. Geoid : It is a measure of mean sea level.
