Why does a LiDAR sensor require GPS?

GPS enhances the accuracy of LiDAR by synchronizing its clock with the LiDAR’s clock.

In the Velodyne LiDAR VLP-16, the interface box’s GPS is used to precisely synchronize the sensor’s timestamp with GPS time.

This is detailed in the official Velodyne manual.

7.4 GPS, Pulse Per Second (PPS) and NMEA Sentence

Your sensor can synchronize data with precise GPS-supplied time. Synchronizing to a GPS-supplied Pulse-Per-Second (PPS) signal provides the ability to compute the exact firing moment of each data point as required by some geo-referencing applications. See Time Synchronization on page 125 for details on GPS time synchronization and how important it is for associating sensor data with the sensor’s environment.
